Two poems

Todd Dillard

Navy Destroyer Ship Building Block Set for Kids

As a child I decided to stop being

a child. I succeeded

almost by accident; I failed

miserably, too. When I see a cow

I say "cow." When served a plate of snails

I flinch like it's a plate of my father's belt.

I know too well what it means

to build an empire: one block

atop the other, again and again,

the act of putting people in places

they are never allowed to leave.

Still, the child I no longer am

is right: the best part of empire

is bringing your fists down

until there's only memory

where empire used to be.

Heraclitus Forever

What else could I do? I loved

you more, so I ate the river.

It bucks and writhes inside me

like a strand of your hair.

This is how I remain

the same: your hand crossing

my body sames my body,

and because it’s only my body

you touch like this, my body

sames your hand. Now

a white bowl of olive pits sits

beside an empty wooden bowl.

You're so full you ask for more.

It takes the air between us

dying for this water to be born.
