Crown Shy
crown shy trees
create craquelure
in the canopy above.
it’s the tree equivalent
of pee shyness - a little
respectful room between
us, a few stalls apart,
a gesture of graceful
distance. would that we,
like the trees, gave air
& space to those around
us? how much more
sky would crown us?
Trunked*
We don’t know where “trunk” comes from.
The sense of being boxed in, as in a car
trunk comes much later, and is related to
the sense of trunk as container. For the
Body that would mean the wooden box of
our guts. For a tree it would be the guts of
their wood, I would think. All the boxes
that box us in, from the trunk: the cradle
& the coffin (the difference between
a casket and a coffin being its boxiness - a
casket has 4 sides & a coffin 6). All that
separates birth from death & all the
woulds in between. The nearest we know
is that “trunk” probably first meant “to cut
off”
